2005 PSAL FOOTBALL PLAY-OFF STRUCTURE
By Alan Arbuse, Football Commissioner & Jerry Epstein, Asst Commissioner

PSAL CHAMPIONSHIP

  1. Sixteen (16) teams will be included in a single elimination play-off structure.
  2. The Sixteen (16) teams that have the first, second, third, fourth, etc. through 16 with the greatest point total will be the entrants.
  3. Teams will be seeded first by their strength of schedule as determined by pre-loaded points, then their  rank, as determined by their total points earned:

a. Five points will be awarded for each win against a team rated 5, three points for each win against a team rated 3, and one point for each team rated 1.

b. Points will be awarded for each of your opponents’ wins: only if you beat them. (If you lost to your opponent, you will not receive the points for theirs wins).

c. The rating and number of wins of an opponent you beat = game points.
- Total of your game points = your quality points – *Preloaded points will be added to the quality points of each team. The points will be based on the number of five, three, and one rated teams that are on their schedule. Five points for each five rated team, three points for each three rated team, and one point for each one rated team on their schedule.

- Each win earns you the quality points of your opponent.

- Your Quality Points, plus the quality points of each of your wins = your power points.

Team Ratings are based on the following:

The regular season wins are totaled, then averaged to get Average Wins Per Year [WPY]

Total Power Points accumulated are totaled then averaged to determine Average Ranking Per Year [PPY]

The Final Regular Season Ranking is totaled and averaged to determine the Average Ranking Per Year [RPY]

The Post Season is totaled then averaged [PSR]

10= Championship, 8= Finalist, 6= Semifinalist, 4= Quarter Finalist, 2= Wild Card, 1= No Playoff

The Avg. PP’s Per Year[PPY] are divided by the Avg. Wins Per Year [WPY] to give the Quality of Each Win [QW]

The Quality of Each Win [QW] is then divided by the Avg. Ranking [RPY] to give you the Regular Season Ranking.[RSR]

The Regular Season Ranking [RSR] is then multiplied by the Post Season Result [PSR]. This gives you THE RATINGS OF EACH TEAM!

Team ratings have been determined by the Commissioner, Asst Commissioner, PSAL Observers, PSAL Staff, Borough Reps. , Coaches Selection and the Formula above developed by Peter Gamberdella of Curtis High School.

Total of 43 Varsity teams will be playing Football in 2005.
