2006 GIRLS HANDBALL TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP

The match ups in the semifinals were 4th seed Fort Hamilton vs. 1st seed Boys and Girls and 2nd seed Midwood against 3rd seed Townsend Harris. On two sides of the court, under threatening skies, were two very intense matches. The rain delayed the action for about an hour. The teams waited anxiously as they mentally prepared to return to the courts. With a score of 2-2, Midwood and Townsend Harris were to begin their last and deciding game. In the meantime, Fort was down 1-0 to Boys and Girls. By the end of this long evening Boys and Girls H.S. and Townsend Harris were our finalist.

The finals were a contrast of weather with bright, sunny skies shinning over the girl’s team championship which were played on Saturday afternoon May 20th at Grand Street Campus. Boys and Girls H.S. handball team, coached by Ruth Lovelace, successfully defended their title. Coach Lovelace, a dedicated and highly respected coach in multiple sports, has led her team through 12 championships.

The veteran team; Quasia Watson, Shyanne Frech, Tanya Green, Ivane McKay, Julissa Perez, Yaritza Villalba and Arabia Davis, played each round with confidence and poise. Townsend Harris, coached by Jim Jordan also a highly respected coach in multiple sports, put up a strong fight. The team; Lily Gao, Linda Thai, Joann Lee, Jorgena Mato, Pricilla Aguilar, Michelle Kwa and Evelyn Ong played with heart. They did a remarkable job getting to the finals. Both teams are to be commended for their strong competitive spirit and great sportsmanship.
