The Department of Education Mandates AED Certification for All
Coaches
AED Registration Information
In May 2002 legislation was enacted to add a new section 917 to the Education
Law requiring school districts to provide Automated External Defibrillators
(AED) for use during emergencies. An AED is a device that is used to restore a
normal heartbeat in an individual who has experienced sudden cardiac arrest
caused by certain kinds of irregular heartbeats.
The state law also requires public schools to ensure the presence of
personnel who are trained in the operation and use of an AED:
· Whenever public school facilities are used for school-sponsored or
school-approved curricular or extracurricular activities, or
· Whenever a
school-sponsored athletic contest or practice is held at any location.
The Department of Education, in its continuous effort to ensure the safety of
its student-athletes is mandating all coaches to be certified in First Aid/ and
CPR/AED. This additional AED requirement must be in all coaching position
postings for the 2003-04 school year.

Please be advised that effective immediately all PSAL CPR instructors
may no longer schedule CPR classes for reimbursement from the PSAL. This is due
to the fact that the Department of Education has mandated CPR/AED certification
for all coaches and will provide free instruction. PSAL instructors may now only
teach First Aid. The PSAL will continue to reimburse PSAL instructors for First
Aid certification. Click on the PSAL First Aid link for a list of the PSAL First
Aid instructors.
Now on the First Aid link it should say "watch this site for a list of First
Aid instructors" As we get their names, contact info, etc we will put them up as
we have them listed for First Aid and CPR
