Jonathan Iglesias, Forest Hills’ 1st singles told Coach Wolin and his team, “I don’t care what it takes, I want the same dream that Victor Lopierre (former 1st singles) accomplished in 2003.”
Forest Hills won the coin toss and Coach Wolin immediately called for his top brass, Iglesias. In most cases, coaches save their best for the deciding game in the best-of-five match-up. Iglesias was about to face Midwood’s 1st singles, Jurrel Bastidas. The 1hr 10minute game was even with both players shooting for angle killshots only when the opportunity was right.
With the score tied at 14, an exhausted Jurell called timeout to regain some strength and immediately reeled off 6 straight points, leaving Iglesias facing match point. Looking to his teammates, coaches, and fans for support, Iglesias reacquired the serve and scored 7 unanswered points to notch an incredible 21-20 victory.
Midwood’s ace servers, 2nd singles Stanley Zavoyskiy (21-6) and 3rd singles Viet (Sammy) Nguyen (21-1) dominated their opponents with great placement and finesse in their serves. Between these games the Forest Hills’ 1st doubles team of Fabian Mendoza and Marcelo Quiroga were able to hold off a determined Midwood team of Ioi Wah Lin and Lun Zhe Chen by a score of 21-16
With the match tied at 2-2, 2nd doubles would be the deciding game. Scores of 12-11 and 18-16 in 90 degree weather clearly gave you the image of these four very tired young athletes. In the end having no timeouts remaining (though an additional one was permitted due to the heat) Johnny Chen and Gary Chang (Midwood) were unable to rally all the way back as they fell short 21-19 to Daniel Rusanov and Michael Amen, awarding Forest Hills the 2004 PSAL Boys Handball Championship.
